Eskifjörður

Camping Sites / East Iceland

This pretty campground is located on a tree-sheltered bank of the small river Bleiksá, it is next to the church where the highway enters the west end of town. The information center and swimming pool remain open throughout the year and are located close by. The fishing and marine surroundings of Eskifjörður are highlighted by the traditional, red-painted fishing sheds along the shore, which may encourage you to try some fishing yourself. The East Icelandic Maritime Museum will give you many insights into the history and economy of the region.

A fishing shed from pre-World War II, Randulfssjóhús, still contains traditional items originally used in the shed, as well as housing a splendid restaurant and, in summer, renting boats and fishing rods to help you enjoy the fjord. By driving or cycling a little farther east, you will reach the mine at Helgustaðir, one of Europe’s largest, best-known mines for Iceland spar. Eskifjörður is one of the seven villages that comprise the municipality of Fjarðabyggð.
