Melanes Rauðasandur

Camping Sites / Westfjords

In Melanes, the only camping site on Rauðasandur beach is run. On a beautiful green field next to the sand, with a stunning view of Látrabjarg. From the camping site, it is possible to go in all directions and experience wildlife and nature. There are toilets and shower facilities for everyone, with wheelchair access. Cooking facilities, a washing machine, an outdoor grill, benches, tables, and a playground are available.

Seals can be seen on the beach, and hundreds of seals are there all year round. It is an easy 1.5 km walk from the campsite to Sjöundá, which is an abandoned farm that many know from the story “The Black Cliffs” by Gunnar Gunnarsson. From Sjöundá, it is possible to walk further, including a moderately difficult hike to Skor’s viewpoint (although this route is not for the faint-hearted), and a difficult but beautiful hiking trail through Sjöundárdalur, Ölduskarð, and down into the obsidian mines in Stálfjall.
