The campsite is spacious and peaceful with access to toilets, outdoor sinks with cold water, and electricity. Shower access is available for purchase.
Next to the campsite is a football field, and a playground is close by. Various equipment and balls owned by the local youth association can be borrowed.
Kiðagil is located in the middle of Bárðardalur valley along road no. 842, west of the Skjálfandafljót river, just over 20 km from the Ring Road. About one kilometer further south is a bridge over the Skjálfandafljót river leading to roads no. 844 and 843.
It is ideal for families to stay several nights and take day trips to waterfalls such as Aldeyjarfoss, Hrafnabjargafossar, and Goðafoss (18–22 km), or go swimming at Laugar (37 km). There are two routes to the lake Mývatn area: the traditional route via the Ring Road (60 km to Skútustaðir), or the mountain route between Engidalur and Stöng (45 km to Skútustaðir – not suitable for small cars). The distance to Húsavík is 71 km, and to Akureyri is 55 km through the Vaðlaheiði Tunnel (tunnel toll).
There is a restaurant at Kiðagil open from 12:00–21:00, offering both a coffee menu and a food menu. You can find many exciting local specialties there, such as smoked trout, wild mushroom soup, handpicked herb-seasoned lamb fillet, and freshwater Arctic char. Other locally sourced ingredients are also used, such as rhubarb, blueberries, and crowberries. Breakfast can be purchased — please speak to the staff. There is also a small bar on site and a small gallery with handmade products made by the residents of the valley.
We are working on further improvement at the campsite facilities, and the range of activities continues to develop.
